Introduction

We spent months testing a natural cleaning product that outperformed ordinary commercial cleaners. This is, in our opinion, the best soap scum and limescale remover. Super simple to make at home with ingredients you probably already have on hand.

The thing about a shower screen is that if it is dirty, the whole bathroom will look grimy. Unfortunately, soap scum is difficult to avoid completely. Nevertheless, with the proper cleaner, you can keep it clean with minimal effort.

Find out how to get rid of stubborn soap scum with our homemade formula. Follow our cleaning tips, and your shower will be spotless in no time!

What Exactly Is Soap Scum

Soap scum is the chalky white film that forms in showers, bathtubs, and sinks as we use them. This film is made up of natural minerals found in the water. Which in turn, when mixed with soap form a sticky layer that adheres to bathroom surfaces. Over time, the longer it sits, the more difficult it is to remove.

Homemade Shower Screen Cleaner

Mixing and usage instructions to make 500ml of homemade shower screen/glass cleaner.

Whatever size mixture you make, a ratio of 20% vinegar and 5-10% IPA is used. It makes little difference whether the IPA is 70% or 90%; the objective is to have some solvent in the solution. This helps in the breakdown of soap scum.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Step One:
Fill a spray bottle with 100ml vinegar and 50ml IPA.

Step Two:
Squirt a drop of dishwashing soap (about 2ml) to the mix, this helps bind everything together.

Step Three:
Fill to the 500ml mark with water.

Step Four:
Spray the formula liberally over the glass screen. We tested two methods in wiping down the cleaner using a scrubbing brush and a magic eraser. Scrubbing with the nail brush cut through the grime straight away. Both work, but the magic eraser is far more effective. As a result, we recommend that you use the magic eraser.

Step Five:
Rinse the solution using your shower attachment.

Tip...!
Spray your mixture on a microfiber cloth and wipe away water spots on the outside.

Cleaning The Shower Taps

Instructions on how to clean the shower taps and remove soap scum from them.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Step One:
Use the same solution that you used to clean the shower screen to spray the taps.

Step Two:
Allow the solution to sit for a few minutes to do its work.

Step Three:
After some time has passed, spray some more solution on the taps.

Step Four:
Scrub the taps with your small scrubbing brush.

Step Five:
Give a quick rub over with the magic sponge.

Step Six:
Using a microfiber towel, buff to dry.

Conclusion

By making your own cleaning solutions, and following the steps above, you will be able to effectively remove soap scum from your shower and not have to use harsh store-bought chemicals.
