We can probably all agree that we hate cleaning the toilet. No one wants to clean the toilet, but unfortunately it is a necessary evil to stop the spread of germs and bacteria. Knowing how to clean a toilet properly is essential for keeping a clean and healthy bathroom.

Because we use the toilet so frequently throughout the day, it is important that we keep it as clean as possible. Thankfully, this does not have to be a particularly difficult task. We’ve rallied up some tips and tricks to effectively make it a lot easier. But first, we'll need to make some homemade all purpose cleaner.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step-by-step instructions to clean your toilet in about 3 minutes.

Step One: Deal with the Limescale
Apply the hydrochloric acid (only if you need to). Because our toilet in the video below had bad limescale, we applied some of the commercial cleaner into the bowl. Allowing it to sit for a few hours.

Step Two: Clean the Exterior
Clean the dust or build-up on the outside of the toilet. Using a paper towel, start at the top of the toilet tank and work your way down. This is important as it will remove 80-90% of the grime on your toilet.

Step Three: Apply the Homemade All Purpose Cleaner
Spray the exterior and your toilet bowl with your homemade cleaning product. Remember to spray around the seat and lid, especially the fittings, bolts, and screws.

Step Four: Wipe it Down
Wipe clean with a fresh, clean paper towel. The rubbing alcohol dissolves the urine and other nasty deposits in the toilet bowl.

Step Five: Scrub the Bowl
Scrub the toilet bowl with a toilet brush. Taking care to scrub under the rim and down into the trap.

Step Six: Flush it Real Good
Flush, and use the flush water to clean your brush. Hang the brush under the toilet seat for it to drip-dry.

Conclusion

Cleaning your toilet can be done in less than three minutes once you get into the swing of it. However, there are a few good cleaning routines that you should adopt:

  • A quick wipe at the end of the day is a good habit to develop.
  • It is essential to keep your toilet clean with a good scrub once a week. Of course, this is dependent on the number of people using the toilet. The more people who use the toilet, the more often it will need to be cleaned.
  • Deep clean to eliminate stains once a month.
