What's in This Guide?

Introduction

We spent the last few months testing and developing our own natural cleaning products. We are not supporters of harsh chemicals and harmful cleaning products, so we need to come up with something both environmentally friendly and super cheap.

In this post, we put them to the test in a bathroom that hasn't been cleaned in 60 days (purposely). We ran a test run two months ago, but now we want to take it up a level by varying the mix slightly.

In this guide we will show you how to super clean the following in your bathroom:

  • The shower screen that is covered in soap scum and limescale
  • The bath covered in grime
  • Grimy taps
  • A filthy toilet

Our homemade formulas should handle this quite swiftly. Put on your rubber gloves, grab your amazing homemade cleaning products, and get to work. Let's put it to the test and see what happens.

Clean the Shower Screen

When your glass shower screens are dirty, the entire bathroom seems filthy. Soap build-up and hard water stains are enough to drive you insane. So, follow our cleaning guidelines below to keep your bathroom's shower screen sparkling!

Limescale Cleaner Recipe

Ingredients you'll need to make a limescale cleaner for your bathroom:

  • White vinegar
  • Rubbing alcohol (IPA) (we believe that surgical spirits will do the same thing)
  • Dish washing soap
  • Spray bottle of water
  • Magic sponge / small scrubbing brush

Step-By-Step Instructions

Whatever size mixture you make, a ratio of 20% vinegar and 5-10% IPA is used. It makes little difference whether the IPA is 70% or 90%; the objective is to have some solvent in the solution. This helps in the breakdown of soap scum.

Step One:
Fill a spray bottle with 100ml vinegar and 50ml IPA.

Step Two:
Add a drop of dishwashing soap (approx. 2ml) to the mix, this helps bind everything together.

Step Three:
Fill to the 500ml mark with water.

Step Four:
Spray the formula liberally over the glass screen. We tested two methods in wiping down the cleaner. Scrubbing with the nail brush cut through the grime straight away. Both work, but the magic sponge was far more effective. As a result, we recommend that you use the magic sponge.

Step Five:
Rinse the solution using your shower head.

Tip...
Spray your mixture on a microfiber cloth and wipe away water spots on the outside.

Clean the Taps

Water, soap, grime, and even lime corrode our bathroom taps, which are subjected to products or substances that diminish their lustre. Discover how to effortlessly restore them to their former glory.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Step One:
Use the same limescale solution that you used to clean the shower screen to spray the taps.

Step Two:
Allow the solution to sit while you clean the shower screen.

Step Three:
After a few minutes has passed, spray some more solution on the taps.

Step Four:
Using your small brush scrub the taps.

Step Five:
Give a quick rub over with the magic sponge.

Step Six:
Buff to dry with your microfibre towel.

How to Clean the Bathtub

Getting rid of limescale, soap scum, mineral deposits, and grime in your bathtub may appear to be a difficult task, but with a few simple steps, you can have it sparkling clean. Make bath time enjoyable again by following our cleaning guidelines.

Clean the Toilet

Hardly anyone enjoys cleaning the toilet, but frequent cleaning removes bacteria and unsightly mineral build-up.

What You'll Need

  • If necessary, a commercial cleanser containing hydrochloric acid
  • All-purpose cleaner(recipe above)
  • Paper towels

Step-By-Step Instructions

Step One:
Apply the hydrochloric acid (only if you need to). Because our toilet had bad limescale, we sprayed some of the commercial cleaner into the bowl and let it sit for a few hours.

Step Two:
Clean the dust or build-up on the outside of the toilet. Using a paper towel, start at the top of the toilet tank and work your way down. This is important because it will remove 80-90% of the crud on your toilet.

Step Three:
Spray the exterior of the toilet and your inside bowl with your homemade cleaning product.

Step Four:
Wipe clean with a fresh clean paper towel. All the urine deposits and other nasty crud inside the toilet are dissolved by the rubbing alcohol.

Step Five:
Scrub the toilet bowl with a toilet brush. Taking care to clean under the rim and down into the trap.

Step Six:
Flush and use the flush water to clean your brush. Hang the brush under the toilet seat for it to drip dry.

Conclusion

All though it can be a pain, cleaning your bathroom not only makes it look good, but also helps with hygiene. The stpes above should make cleaning your bathroom a little easier, a little safer with regards to harsh chemicals, and will leave it looking almost like new again.
